Haydn ‘The Creation’

Concert details

Haydn was inspired to write Creation during his visits to England in the 1790s, when he heard many of the oratorios of Handel, including Israel in Egypt. Creation was written in 1797 and 1798, and is generally considered to be one of Haydn’s masterpieces. The work, which depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as told in the Book of Genesis, is structured in three parts and scored for Soprano, Tenor and Bass Soloists, Chorus, and Orchestra. In parts I and II the soloists represent the Archangels Raphael, Uriel and Gabriel, and in Part III the Bass and Soprano represent Adam and Eve. Creation is a monumental and very dramatic work, full of musical tone painting.

We are delighted to welcome Helen Bailey, Robert Sotillo and Sam Wilson-King as our Soloists for this performance, together with  our splendid orchestra players under leader Kokila Gillett-Khan.
